Heylo :),
yesterday I went to watch one of the best movies everr, as the name says it all, Parzania. What bothers me is that it flopped, it is somehow so ironic, we spend tons and tons of money to watch escapist, candy-floss fare like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and more recently, KANK, but movies like Parzania flop, these movies should be woven into school curriculums to enable the new generation appreciate, even fifty years' of non-violence beaconism can't stem the monstrous atrocity that Indians choose to inflict on Indians in the name of religion.
Storywise, Parzania is a honest take on the Godhra aftermath through the eyes of a Parsi family, and though it has been softened a lot (which I think can be attributed to the awful censorship which rules our cinemas, Murder gets through with no cuts while Black Friday takes 3 years to pass the buck ?), but kudos to Rahul Dholakia, who finds other as-effective touch-points to drive the point home, this one rivals Bombay in execution, while likes of Pinjar can only aspire.
Its amazing how Gujrat paid for being one of the most developed states in India, which allowed Mr. Narendra Modi to carry out mass genocide with a precision which would have humbled killer original a la Hitler himself. The Hindu shops were marked with saffron flags exactly 2 days before the carnage, and to be doubly sure, the butchers carried around lists detailing the religion of each Businessman and shopkeeper. Narendra Modi is increasingly proving to be the best CM Gujrat has seen post-ChimmanBhai Patel, but nothing can ever, ever make up for even .0001% of the atrocities Mr. Modi chose to inflict on his unprotected, peaceful citizens. Today talk of Nithari killings attract waves of revulsion, I wonder what would you call decapitation of private body parts with no remorse, but laughter and amusement ? Try giving a name ? Also, I dont understand, if Hindus think Muslims are infidels and vice-versa, how come they choose to rape the womenfolk, what can be more impure than physical contact ?? But, as they would justify it, its to produce a Hindu / Muslim child, but why does a child carry traits of his/her father is obviously a nincompoopic debate for them as well the Indian society in general, nahin ? [And this argument falls by the wayside if you were gonna kill the woman after the heinous act anyways, right ?] By the way, at my cynical best, I will not be surprised if a "fair" enquiry into the Godhra happenings reveal that it was Mr. Modi only who transpired the train incident in the first place, I have a sincere question, even though you might not like or even hate fellow humans on the basis of human boundaries, how can someone live after carrying out atrocities like these, won't the innocent eyes wake you up, would the screams ever die out ?
Cinematically, the movie affects you by the kind of power that a director wields over the movie, one moment can change the whole outlook and horror can be created in unspoken ways and nuances. Its going all hunky-dory and happy for Parzaan's family before terror chooses to strike in unexpected, crushing ways.
I have much, much more to write, back-to-back movies like Blood Diamond and Parzania can have that effect on you, when you realize its only humans, not machines, who will make humans extinct. For, some unfathomable reason, instead of respecting life's gift, people choose to snatch it from others.
Do watch Parzania. Enough said.
